“Having been active from the early nineteen-seventies and spending endless hours watching Dibden Bay in its heyday; the reservoir and reclamation at Fawley Refinery, when I was privileged to have access; and the saltmarshes at Calshot, where in 1983 I co-found (along with my good friend, the late Dr. Michael Witherick) Hampshire’s first record of Short-toed Lark, I decided to go west and concentrate most of my efforts on Lepe.

I have not regretted it for one moment – enjoying its rich and varied habitat, splendid scenery, and wide selection of birds.

I hope that this short account of the birds recorded over the last twenty years will bring back memories for some and, perhaps, inspiration for the next generation.”
